Today, there is significant emphasis for the production of hybrid and electric vehicles as a means to reduce tailpipe emissions and greenhouse gases arising from internal combustion engine vehicles. Most automotive manufacturers are already, or will soon be mass producing these vehicles. Part of the reason for this initiative has come about through global legislation which mandates significant reductions in tailpipe emissions across the manufacturers’ fleets of vehicles. More recently, both France and the UK have mandated the end of sales of internal combustion engine passenger vehicles by the year 2040.In modern electric vehicles, there are several aluminum high pressure die-castings used in housing and packaging applications. These castings all have significant thermal management requirements. Here, the thermal conductivity of high pressure die-casting aluminum alloys is considered. Improving the thermal conductivity of die-castings via novel heat treatment methods may have significant performance and cost benefits for electric vehicles and other applications utilising high performance electronics.addition to being a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, he is also a Fellow of the Institute of Engineers , Australia. Comparison of RANS simulations with dual-plane PIV measurements for a hovering rotor bladeNumerical simulations were conducted to study the development and turbulent decay of the tip vortices in the wake produced by a hovering rotor blade. An extensive series of RANS calculations was performed and the results were compared to detailed dual-plane Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurements of a turbulent tip vortex trailed from a single-bladed rotor. The required mesh resolution was investigated and the most suitable turbulence closure models with corrections for rotation and streamline curvature was chosen by assessing their predictions of the tip vortex properties that improve capturing of the overall nature of the rotor wake. It was found that even when using a higher-order spatial discretization scheme is employed, a minimum grid spacing equal was required to accurately predict the core size, peak swirl velocity and strength of the tip vortex. It was found that the rotational/curvature corrections applied to the Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model better preserved the vortex characteristics to later wake ages than the same corrections applied to thek-ω SST model. In both cases, the correction proposed by Spalart and Shur outperformed the simplified correction proposed by Dacles-Mariani et al., with the latter providing little impact on thek-ω SST model. However, despite the reasonable agreement of the mean quantities with the measurements poor predictions of the Reynolds stress distributions was obtained in all cases. 4. Adaptive mesh refinement and sub-cell discontinuity resolution for high order discontinuous Galerkindiscretizations Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretizations possess features making them attractive for high-resolution computations in three-dimensional flows that include strong discontinuities and embedded complex flow features. Key elements, which could make the DG method more suitable for computations of such time-dependent flows in complex domains, is use of adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) and application of limiting procedures that ensure sharp and accurate capturing of discontinuities for unstructured mixed-type meshes. A unified limiting approach suitable for increased order ofexpansion and adaptive mesh refinement is introduced in the context of it h/p-adaptivity in order to locally enhance resolution forthree-dimensional flow simulations that include discontinuities and embedded complex flow features.Furthermore, a nonlinear filter is employed in the finite element context of discontinuous DG discretizations to achieve low dissipative, well-balanced, high-order discontinuity capturing. It is shown that for higher order discretizations discontinuity resolution within the cell is achieved and the design order of accuracy is preserved. The filter is applied for a number of standard inviscid flow test problems including strong shocks interactions to demonstrate that the proposed dissipative mechanism for DG discretizations yields superior results compared to the results obtained with the TVB limiter and higher-order hierarchical limiting.The proposed approach is suitable for p–adaptivity in order to locally enhance resolution of three-dimensional flow simulations that include discontinuities and complex flow features. 外教简介:John A.
